The Key Missing Piece That Transformed My Health

One of the most profound tools I use to help clients is muscle testing — and for years, I thought it was BS.

My Story: From Total Brain Fog to Thriving

For over a decade I struggled with chronic digestive issues, debilitating brain fog and insomnia. It’s part of why I got into the health field. Even after I finished my nutrition training and began my career, and started helping others overcome their health issues, I still struggled with my own.

I started seeing a slew of functional medicine doctors. After so much time and money spent on supplements and protocols, I was ultimately no better off. While I saw temporary improvements with some of their interventions, I would always return to feeling bloated after meals, constipated (there is no such thing as TMI in my world), brain fogged, and relying on sleep medication to get through the night. The brain fog was so bad at times that, despite always being an intelligent and high-achieving person, I felt unable to pursue grad school as I just felt, for lack of a better word, too dumb, even though I knew I wasn’t. It was the weirdest, most uncomfortable feeling. It became hard to follow conversations; sometimes while reading a book, I would have to re-read pages several times just to get my mind to absorb and comprehend. I knew this wasn’t me, and kept looking for new healing information and techniques that could help me feel like myself again.

Through my years of working alongside other holistic practitioners, I had been aware of muscle testing — the testing of muscle groups to see whether they shift, or hold strong / go weak, in response to a stimulus like a food, supplement, or a yes/no question. I know of practitioners who used it to help direct their treatment protocols. While I was always intrigued, I didn’t understand or trust it. It seemed too weird and out-there for me! But as time went on I kept hearing about difficult cases resolving under the care of these muscle-testing practitioners, so I started to research. It turns out there is real science behind it based around the autonomic nervous system, and in fact there’s a whole college for it. Some of the most brilliant holistic practitioners I’ve come to follow employ it. I read books, watched training videos, and was lucky enough to find mentors through various channels who showed me how to muscle test myself.

I began testing out supplements and foods on myself using muscle testing to guide me, and found that a few remarkable changes took place — brain fog would clear more than it had previously, and for longer, or I’d get a better nights’ sleep, simply by asking my body what it needed. I practiced on myself, and then a few close people in my life, for the better part of a year and saw some impressive changes, but I knew there was more to be done. While my sleep had improved a lot, and digestion somewhat, I began working with a practitioner who did virtual muscle testing — energetic frequency testing at a distance — to see if things could resolve even further, and that truly was the turning point for me. My health changed in a profound way. I no longer needed sleep medication, I was no longer bloated after meals, I no longer relied on herbs or teas to poop every day, and most excitingly, I could think clearly again. While there have still been ups and downs, as healing is not linear, these changes have remained pretty permanent. My brain fog is essentially a thing of the past. I returned to grad school, my career improved dramatically, and I felt like myself again. These positive changes have become my long-term reality. And I owe it all to muscle testing.

What is Energetic Frequency testing, aka Muscle Testing?

Muscle testing is a technique of checking the strength of muscle groups in the body to see if a person resonates or does not resonate with a substance — a supplement, a pathogen, a food — or even an idea or emotion. It is performed in a variety of ways by thousands of practitioners around the world.

Just like a plant grows toward life-giving sunlight, the body’s muscles will respond with strength to something it resonates with, something that gives it life, or a question it responds “yes” to (for instance, if your body needed more vitamin C, and I asked it if it needs more vitamin C, the muscle group I test would hold strong). It will respond with weakness when presented with something that is not life-giving, something harmful, or a question it responds “no” to.

It is a type of biofeedback, a way to ask the body direct questions about what’s going on internally and what it needs to heal itself. It’s a way of accessing the subtle energetics of the body to uncover imbalances and the solutions that will correct those imbalances.

Does it need to be done in person?

While many practitioners muscle test in person, and it may take a leap of faith to trust that answers can be obtained at a distance, it is absolutely possible. As I mentioned, this is how it was most impactful for me. And while I used to do a bit of muscle testing in person, since I’ve started muscle testing clients completely virtually for the last two years, interestingly, the results have gotten even better.

The way I understand this is that we are all energetic beings — we, like all things in the universe, are made up of molecules that are predominantly pure energy, and communication between energetic beings is not bound by distance. I often see a cell phone analogy used to help explain this, that we’re able to communicate via wavelengths despite being far apart. Again, it takes a leap to get from that to me being able to ask your body questions from miles away through intention, but after years of positive results both personally and with clients, I have come to trust it.

Just one part of the puzzle

While I trust and employ muscle testing daily, I believe it’s crucial not to rely on it as the sole basis for clinical decisions. Symptoms, health history, blood work and other forms of testing are also key sources of information. I never recommend doing or taking something simply because one “tests” for it. This is where other experience, knowledge and training come in.

How I use muscle testing in my practice

In addition to reviewing and taking into account all of the other types of information mentioned above, I use a self-muscle testing technique to see if a muscle group in my hands holds strong or goes weak when I ask yes-or-no questions about you (with your permission). I scan a wide range of energetically-charged vials of water, as well as additional lists of words, to see what your body is “in resonance” with.

For instance, if you have a certain kind of infection — let’s say a bacterial infection in your large intestine that’s causing some abdominal discomfort after meals — that microbe, like all beings, vibrates at a certain energetic frequency. You would likely test “yes” when I scan for that particular bacteria, which gives us a clue about next steps. I often see energies show up on muscle testing scans that never appear in blood tests or stool tests. The same goes for emotions — if I’m doing an Emotion Code scan on someone, if you’ve got trapped anger inside you from an old trauma, that anger resonates at a certain frequency that can be detected through muscle testing.

Once I’ve scanned for potential imbalances — pathogens, emotions, toxins, organ / gland imbalances, and more — I then scan vials and lists of possible solutions to see what “cancels out” the frequency of the imbalance. These solutions could be supplements (herbs, vitamins, minerals, other nutrients), foods to eat more of or foods to avoid, lifestyle interventions, emotional / energy work that needs to be done, types, duration and frequency of exercise. This creates a highly personalized plan that lays out what your body is ready for at that moment in time.

What is your body ready to tell us?

Bringing muscle testing into my practice has completely transformed the way I practice, and the lives of hundreds of clients.
